Mr Geoff Graham

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
Medical Director, Vale Healthcare

Geoff Graham specialises in Shoulder and elbow surgery and has been a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the University teaching hospital in Cardiff since 1991. He undertakes only shoulder and elbow surgery and his special interests are in sports injuries, rotator cuff problems and frozen shoulder. He does however treat all types of shoulder and elbow problems. He developed an interest in shoulder and sports surgery due to injuries he sustained to his own shoulders while playing rugby for Wasps as a medical student.

The majority of the surgery he performs is arthroscopic (keyhole) although he also has a large experience of open surgery and through experience has developed the procedures he uses over a number of years. He has access to the most modern diagnostic and therapeutic equipment uses the most appropriate and innovative techniques.

Geoff has a large and successful practice and has 17 years experience of treating elite and professional men and women from all types of sport. He is an Honorary Orthopaedic Surgeon to the WRU, Cardiff Blues, Neath Swansea Ospreys and Gwent Dragons. He is also well known for treating National Hunt Jockey’s and has treated a number of high profile jockey’s as well as quite a few hackers!

Geoff was a founder and Course Director of the Cardiff MSc in Sport and Exercise Medicine at The University of Wales Institute Cardiff and remains closely connected with the course. He is Honorary Senior Lecturer in Sport and Exercise Medicine.

Although he has a special interest in sports injuries the vast majority of his patients are ordinary people with shoulder and elbow problems due to “wear and tear”. These problems are very disabling and through his enormous experience Geoff has developed techniques for successfully treating the vast majority of the patients he sees. He believes that the patient needs to understand the nature of their problem and to be taken through the steps of their treatment. He will always try appropriate conservative methods of treatment such as physiotherapy and injection therapy before resorting to surgery. He works closely with therapists with whom he has a mutual respect.

Geoff has treated thousands of patients with shoulder and elbow problems over the years and it is gratifying that they and their friends and relatives keep coming back!

Geoff is a member of various professional bodies and is co-founder and a director of The Vale Clinic and Vale Healthcare.
