David Shewring specialises in Hand and Wrist surgery. He qualified as a doctor in1984 after training at the Welsh National School of Medicine in Cardiff. After training in orthopaedic surgery in Southampton, Cambridge and Cardiff he trained as a specialist Hand Surgeon in Oxford before appointment as Hand Surgeon to the University Hospital of Wales in 1995. He set up the Hand Surgery service in Cardiff and runs the Hand Injury Unit, which receives referrals from far afield. He has an international reputation for his work on hand fractures.
David is a Council member of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand and has served on a number of its National Hand Surgery committees. He is a member of the Specialist Advisory Committee for Orthopaedic Surgery and is an Examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons. He has given numerous invited lectures in Hand Surgery to National and International meetings and has published many scientific papers on Hand Surgery. He has been a member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Hand Surgery.
David is extensively experienced in treating all conditions of the hand and wrist. All surgery is performed under magnification. He works with a team of Hand Therapists who provide essential postoperative care. He provides care for a wide variety of conditions including nerve compression syndromes, ‘trigger digits’, Dupuytrens contracture, arthritis of the hand and upper limb, and tumours. He is an Honorary Surgeon to the Welsh Rugby Union and to Cardiff Blues and has treated numerous high profile athletes with great success.
